nanotechnology
This description applies to pSivida’s development
of BioSilicon™, which is an example of top-down nanostructuring
whereby the element silicon is nanostructured to create
nano-pores within the material. The “bridges” of
the BioSiliconTM skeleton surrounding these pores are tens
of atoms in width. The pores can be loaded with drugs including
small molecules, peptides, proteins and vaccines. The size
of the pores can be controlled exquisitely during the nanostructuring
process.
pSivida is involved in new nanotechnology markets that
are viewed by Governments and corporate enterprises around
the world as extremely important and capable of providing
significant economic benefits, particularly in areas such
as medicine and healthcare.
pSivida’s research and development work in the area
of nanomedicine was recently recognized with the prestigious
2004 Frost & Sullivan Excellence in Research Award.
